Bodegas Campillo and Bodegas Portia, wineries from Familia Martínez Zabala, have completed the Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection (SWfCP) certification process
Wednesday, September 13th 2023Bodegas Campillo and Bodegas Portia join Bodegas Faustino and Bodegas Marqués de Vitoria with this new certification that credits their work and continuous efforts, which, together with respect and protection of the environment, continue to be the pillars of the Familia Martínez Zabala wine company to which they belong.
SWfCP certification, created by the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV by its Spanish initials) and based on the four basic pillars (environment, society, economy and governance), is the first of its kind and internationally acclaimed in the wine industry.
Bodegas Campillo and Bodegas Portia, have received, Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection (SWfCP) certification, the highest level of certification available exclusively for wineries. Both wineries belong to the Familia Martínez Zabala wine company, which has now successfully completed the certification process for all its wineries in the DOCa Rioja and DO Ribera del Duero regions. This certification attests to compliance with the four criteria based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that set out the road map for organisations and people.
Bodegas Campillo and Bodegas Portia, examples of sustainability
Bodegas Portia was opened in 2010 in Gumiel de Izán (province of Burgos) and is the first winery to be designed and built by Foster + Partners, the firm of the prestigious British architect Norman Foster. Located in a privileged setting, it is a must-see in the Ribera del Duero region. Its striking aesthetics has made it an architectural icon of the wine world.
Bodegas Campillo, in turn, is located in the extraordinary locality of Laguardia and was opened in 1990. It is the first winery designed by a renowned architect as a unique project that brings together the beauty of its forms with the finest winemaking and ageing techniques. The winery is built in the style of a Bordeaux château and stands in the centre of its estate, nestling among 50 hectares of vineyards.
Their compliance at all times with the four essential pillars for which certification is granted makes them both leaders in their respective regions.
SWfCP certification
This certification attests to compliance with four essential criteria: environment (water and waste management, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, soil and biodiversity), society (health and safety of consumers, employees and suppliers, and the land and local culture), economy (efficiency and resilience) and governance (sustainability management, ethical conduct and stakeholder relations).
SWfCP is the first and only specific certification for wineries in terms of environmental sustainability. It focuses on continuous improvement by setting out the criteria for compliance by a sustainable winery through rigorous and measurable performance.
Through this seal, recognised both locally and internationally, the Familia Martínez Zabala wine company demonstrates that its wineries are on track to meet its environmental goals and working for continuous improvement in the efficiency of all their processes in the medium and long term.
Bioprotection
As far as caring for the environment and preserving biodiversity are concerned, Familia Martínez Zabala rely on phytosanitary products of biological rather than chemical origin to treat vine diseases, preventing the negative effects of the latter on human, animal and plant life.
Moreover, Familia Martínez Zabala is aware of the influence the natural environment has on its vineyards, which is why such effective methods have been implemented for the protection of all wildlife and to gently care for microbiota.
All these initiatives were crucial for achieving this new SWfCP certification for Bodegas Campillo and Bodegas Portia as the highest internationally recognised environmental distinction for two pioneering wineries that look to the future from their present.
